Safety and Mobility for Pedestrians and Cyclists FHI is embarking on a number of exciting transportation planning studies focused on community enhancements for biking and walking. Take a "ramble" through some of these projects to see what’s on our horizon: Connecticut Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update – For the Connecticut Department of Transportation, FHI will lead the effort to update the Connecticut Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The update will assess state facilities, policies and improvement recommendations. Innovative practices and policies from around the country will be explored for possible incorporation. A new statewide bike map, in both paper and an on-line interactive format, will also be developed. Safe Routes to School Traffic Consulting Services for the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) – FHI will work collaboratively with CRCOG to implement the region’s Safe Routes to School Program and assist interested schools in developing their individual plans through workshops and site “walkabouts” to identify traffic safety issues and improvement opportunities. FHI will focus on school zone traffic safety in support of walking to school. Regional Traffic Calming Study for the South Central Region Council of Governments (SCRCOG) – FHI is preparing a Traffic Calming Resource Guide and conducting educational workshops for all 15 municipalities in the SCRCOG region on the topic of traffic calming and the process for conducting a traffic calming study. As a follow up to the educational workshops, FHI will conduct a pilot traffic calming project for a selected community within the region to address neighborhood-specific traffic issues and also illustrate the recommended community involvement process for a neighborhood traffic calming study. Complete Streets Initiative for New York City – As part of a tri-venture between Arup, the LiRo Group, and the Louis Berger Group, FHI will assist New York City with various transportation planning projects focused on improving the functionality of the streets in the City with the intent of improving safety for all modes of travel. The concept of “Complete Streets” shifts transportation design focus from a heavy vehicle emphasis to designs that meet the comprehensive needs of a community incorporating all modes of travel. FHI will also provide community outreach as well bicycle and pedestrian planning services. Traffic Calming On-Call Services for the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts – The City of Cambridge has long been a leader in innovative transportation solutions including promotion of alternative modes of transportation. As a partner to Greenman-Peterson, Inc., FHI will assist the City of Cambridge on a variety of neighborhood transportation studies that will further these efforts, enhancing bicycle, pedestrian, and transit opportunities as well as leading community outreach efforts.
