Waterbury-Oxford Airport Improvements

Commercial airplaneAirports face an ever-increasing challenge of providing expanding service for passengers while at the same time mitigating environmental and noise impacts on their environs. FHI has been involved in many airport projects, including the ongoing airport master plan update and related projects at Waterbury-Oxford Airport.

Waterbury-Oxford Airport is located in northern Oxford, CT, a rural area within the Central Naugatuck Valley Region. The airport faces numerous physical constraints to its borders including abutment with a residential community to the north, the Larkin State Bridle Trail to the south, and wetlands to the east and west.

One of the master plan’s key recommendations was the extension of a taxiway to address FAA concerns. The existing taxiway currently extends for only about half of the length of the runway. Completion of the taxiway would prevent the need for aircraft to “back-taxi” on the runway and also eliminate the need for most runway crossings.

Airplane in flightWorking with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) and Clough, Harbour & Associates (CHA), FHI has contributed to the airport master planning process, conducting initial wetlands mitigation research and an evaluation of potential impacts to the Larkin State Bridle Trail. FHI has also moderated both master plan and noise study advisory committee meetings.  The noise study was undertaken to see if master plan recommendations would have any adverse impacts on surrounding neighborhoods.

Under our Environmental Planning On-Call contract with ConnDOT, FHI was also asked to prepare an environmental assessment and environmental impact evaluation (EA/EIE) for the taxiway extension to assess the impact of several taxiway alternatives on wetlands and other resources.

In addition to these two projects at Waterbury-Oxford Airport, FHI is actively working on several other airport projects in Connecticut and Vermont.
