Delivering a Helping Hand to Hyannis...

Road running thru Barnstable

Cape Cod evokes an image of sandy beaches and summer fun.  However, regular visitors to the Cape must also deal with the heavy traffic congestion that such a popular vacation destination generates.  For local residents, the traffic congestion is becoming a year-round reality.  Over the past twenty years, Cape Cod has undergone a tremendous increase in its year-round population due to increases in both off-season visitors as well as full-time residents. Stimulated by this population boom, a corresponding increase in commercial/retail development and professional services has occurred in the town of Barnstable, the Cape’s population and commercial center.  The result has been a tremendous demand for improvements to the transportation infrastructure, including roadways, public transit and pedestrian access.

FHI is part of a project team led by TranSystems that is evaluating transportation improvements for the village of Hyannis, located in Barnstable. The Hyannis Area Transportation Study is being conducted to evaluate potential infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions.  Improvements under consideration include a new interchange on the main arterial (Route 6), local roadway improvements at the oftentimes congested Airport Rotary, and improvements to other transportation facilities and amenities which promote alternative modes, including park and ride facilities, transit service, and bicycle/pedestrian access.

The study is a both a refinement of a prior planning study that evaluated a new interchange option and an expansion of the study area and scope to address overall mobility within Hyannis.  Hyannis already serves as the transportation hub of the Cape, with ferry service to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, a new intermodal bus transfer center, and the Cape’s only commercial airport.  FHI is directing the public involvement and environmental screening tasks of this 18-month project, scheduled to be completed this June.  The public outreach effort includes monthly study advisory group meetings, a website, focus group meetings with key stakeholders, and community meetings.

Environmental issues, including sole source aquifer, numerous wetlands and kettle ponds, and a state scenic highway and national register historic district, are of paramount importance to both residents and visitors to the Cape.  FHI is documenting the study area resources and helping to direct the alternatives development process to ensure minimal impact to these resources so that visitors and residents alike will continue to enjoy their escape to the Cape for years to come.
