FHI welcomes new staff:

Dan Hageman

Dan Hageman, Professional Soil Scientist, has joined FHI’s environmental planning team. Dan brings strong skills in environmental planning, permitting and documentation as well as conservation planning and ecological studies. Dan is a professional soil scientist and wetland specialist.

Francisco Gomes

Francisco Gomes, AICP, ASLA, has joined FHI to add to our urban design and planning skills. Francisco will also be working on FHI’s bicycle and pedestrian planning and Safe Routes to School projects.

FHI in the Community:

Carla Tillery is an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford and is teaching a graduate course in Urban Transportation Planning.

Carla Tillery presented “Leadership and Development” as a guest speaker on March 16, 2010 at the Professional Issues Seminar Series at the University of Connecticut.

Ken Livingston has recently been elected as Treasurer on the board for Bike Walk Connecticut, formerly the Central Connecticut Bicycle Alliance.


FHI Presents:

Ruth Fitzgerald and Jill Barrett presented at the Southern New England Planning Conference in November, 2009. Their session was titled: Making the Most of Public Involvement: A Toolbox for Planning Success and focused on: 1) Being More Effective with Public Involvement 2) Being More Comfortable with Public Involvement 3) Reaching Out on a Shoestring and 4) Win-Win Results.

At the same conference, Sam Eisenbeiser and Carol Gould presented a session titled: Mall Traffic - Driving Us Crazy: Can anything be done about shopping mall traffic? This session focused on the connection between land use patterns and traffic congestion in the context of a major retail center located east of Hartford. They discussed their findings on a recent project and highlighted recommended land use strategies to address the issue.

Marcy Miller presented at the 1,000 Friends of Connecticut Smart Growth Conference on the Connecticut Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update recently completed by FHI.  Follow this link for more about the plan: www.ctbikepedplan.org

Ruth Fitzgerald and Jill Barrett will be presenting at the New Jersey TransAction Conference on April 28th in Atlantic City.  They will be presenting a session, moderated by Ruth, entitled:  Responding to Public Need at Warp Speed: the Lake Champlain Bridge Story with HNTB and CHA.  The panel will discuss the public involvement, bridge design, and environmental processes and the fast-paced coordination that has taken place to ensure that construction of a replacement Lake Champlain Bridge begins this spring following the demolition of the old bridge on December 28, 2009!


FHI Staff Out and About:

David Laiuppa and Laurel Stegina attended the Connecticut Association of Inland Wetland Commissioners (CACIWC) in November.

Laurel Stegina attended the New England Resource Conservation & Development Fall Conference in November.

Ruth Fitzgerald, Mike Morehouse and Sam Eisenbeiser attended the 1,000 Friends of Connecticut Smart Growth this March in Hartford.

Leslie Black and Kristen Ahlfeld will be joining Ruth and Jill at the New Jersey TransAction conference in April.

Susan VanBenschoten and Laurel Stegina will be attending the WTS-Boston Annual Dinner in April.


FHI Family News:

We are delighted to welcome three babies to the FHI family over the past few months! Rachel Bright, husband Pawlos and big brother Nathan welcomed Hannah; Becky Parkin, husband Chris and big brother Danny were joined by Kathleen; and Kelley Kelly and husband John welcomed Matthew to join big sisters Katie and Evie. All three moms are doing well and are back to work at FHI.
