FHI is seeking a creative Urban Designer or Urban Planner for our Community Design Service Line. If you are passionate about developing creative approaches to community issues, enjoy working with high achieving, innovative people, and you want to be part of a growing, mid-size design firm, FHI is the place for you.  Our projects include town and village center planning and design, transit-oriented development planning, municipal master plans, open space planning, streetscape design, form-base codes and design, regional and statewide development plans. 

We are looking for an experienced professional with minimum 5 years of experience and who can manage projects and project tasks, engage in all aspects of design, prepare project visuals, maps, and renderings, and present and discuss materials with clients, stakeholders, and the general public.

The best candidate will be able to demonstrate flexibility in project roles, tasks, and deadlines, and have strong organizational and communication skills including the presentation of technical information and facilitation of meetings. The candidate should be a team player, take ownership of their work, be creative in problem solving, and support business development efforts.

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture
  • 5+ years of related responsibility and a demonstrated increase in professional growth over this time
  • Excellent communication skills with strong written, oral, editing, and analytical abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills; interested in working in dynamic, collaborative studio environment but can also work independently
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
  • Functional abilities in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, SketchUp, or similar design tools are a plus
  • Knowledge of innovative community engagement tools, including websites and a variety of survey instruments
  • Willingness to attend evening meetings and travel on project-related business
  • Multilingual ability an asset
  • Valid Driver’s License
